Assist patients with medical debt crisis, employment retention and insurance access to care issues
Founded in 1996, Patient Advocate Foundation (PAF) is a national non-profit, 501(c)3 direct patient services organization with a mission “to safeguard patients through effective mediation assuring access to care, maintenance of employment and preservation of their financial stability.” PAF serves as an active liaison between patients and their insurer, employer and/or creditors to resolve insurance, job retention, and/or debt crisis matters relative to their diagnosis through professional case managers and a national network of health care attorneys. PAF case managers work with patients to determine local, state, and federal programs that provide assistance for their individual needs.
Direct Patient Services are provided to patients nationwide at no cost. PAF case managers are specialized in the areas of oncology nursing, coding and billing, pre-authorization approvals, expedited appeals, expedited application for federal and state assistance, and disability: They resolve debt crisis related to diagnosis; mediate insurance appeals; negotiate access to pharmaceuticals agents, chemotherapy, medical devices and surgical procedures; broker resources to supplement the limits of insurance and to assure access to care for the insured, uninsured and underinsured.
In addition to the services provided through its Direct Patient Services, PAF has 21 unique programs including our Co-Pay Relief (CPR), A Patient Assistance Program.

How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Nancy Davenport-Ennis, Founder of Patient Advocate Foundation personally became involved in legislative reform on behalf of cancer patients while a dear friend of hers, Cheryl Grimmel, was battling breast cancer and her insurance company. As Cheryl valiantly fought her fight, the Virginia Task Force for Insurance Reform fought to reform insurance coverage for cancer patients. Victory for the task force came with the passage of Virginia House Bill 240 sponsored by Delegate Mary Christian in 1994.
Cheryl lost her battle with breast cancer in December 1994, and on the night of her funeral, as the rest of the world was ringing in the New Year, Nancy and Jack Ennis wrote business plans for National Patient Advocate Foundation and Patient Advocate Foundation. Cheryl's inspiration lives on in each initiative in which the Foundation is involved as it seeks to provide avenues of access to insurance funding for evolving cancer therapies, therapeutic agents and devices deemed medically efficacious by the medical and scientific communities through legislative reform.
Born of two, NPAF and PAF are now the working organizations of many. At the helm are an Executive Board, Scientific Board, and Honorary Board, and supporting it all are our Partners in Progress.
